Mid autumn festival, or mooncake festival, which falls on the 15th night of the 8th lunar month in the chinese calendar. Apparently being celebrated by Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese too.
lots of stories about this, but the lantern is definately a part of them... lanterns used to look like the above, but now you can find hello kitties, doraemon, power puff girls and power rangers lantern... ugly imho...
